I now litter train my puppies with lots of success. I use wood pellet litter made by “Pinnacle” it can also used in cat boxes. There are other brand names that are be the same. You can purchase the wood pellets at most pet supply stores.

I use wood pellets because puppy feet have hair on the bottoms and the normal cat litter would track too easily and make for a great mess. I have also found that the wood pellets contain the urine odour more readily giving off a pleasant woody odour. Wood pellets are also a natural disinfectant that is not reproduced in any other cat litter product.

Cleaning the wood pellet litter is easy. Just remove the faecal matter and then use a litter scoop to remove the pellets. As the wood litter gets wet it turns to sawdust and the sawdust is easily and naturally disposed of in your regular trash bin. I would put it in a plastic grocery bag that can be knotted so that as the sawdust dries it stays contained.

By the time you get your puppy he or she will be well on the way to being house trained which makes life with a new puppy so much easier.

When you first get your puppy keep the puppy in a small area so it is easy for him to remember to use the litter box. It is also close by so the puppy will be able to get to it in time. The space needs to be large enough for food, water toys, their blanket or bed. They can be stay in this area while you are away working or just away from your new puppy. They can also stay in this same area while you busy.

Another option is the purchase of a second hand baby playpen or an Xpen from your local pet store. Equip it with food, water, bed or crate and a litter box. Don’t forget TOYS. Either of these options keep the puppy from having any accidents caused by being too far from the litter. It also keeps him or her out of playing with “FORBIDDEN STUFF”. As he or she grows it is easy to move the litter box out of doors.

Give your puppy time to become accustomed to his new surrounding.{A day maybe two} The time will be different for each puppy, you will know when your puppy is comfortable. Then you can decide if you want him to continue with the litter box or begin to replace it with the great outdoors.

The puppy can be trained to go outside by taking him or her for a walk. It may take a bit of time until the puppy goes outside for the first time. But the great outdoors with all the smells make going outside a grown-up thing to do. The puppy will soon learn be asking to go out.
